Pregnancy after weight loss surgery

Many women of childbearing age ask if pregnancy is possible after weight loss surgery. The answer is yes. In fact, obesity itself can make it harder to become pregnant. Some women choose weight loss surgery to improve fertility or to meet the criteria for IVF programmes.

Research shows that women who lose weight after bariatric surgery have a lower risk of problems during pregnancy, labour, and delivery. Because of this, you may find it easier to become pregnant after your operation. For that reason, it’s important to use reliable contraception. Your GP can give you the best advice about what is right for you.

For the health of both you and your baby, we strongly recommend avoiding pregnancy in the first 12 months after surgery, or until your weight has stabilised. During this early stage, your body is going through rapid weight loss and it can be difficult to get enough nutrition for a developing baby. Women who become pregnant soon after surgery often need extra nutritional support, and their weight loss usually slows or stops.

If you do become pregnant after surgery, please let your surgeon and dietitian know straight away. Regular follow-up with your healthcare team will help ensure you and your baby stay healthy throughout.

Celebrate small wins that add up to big milestones.
