Body weight is measured by Body Mass Index – Measure Your BMI
Weight loss surgery may be suitable for adults who have:
- BMI of 40 or greater; or
- BMI of 30 to 35 or greater together with a significant health condition that could be improved through surgery. These conditions include diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea syndrome, joint disorders, etc.
Patients should first try to lose weight through diet and exercise for several months without success. They must also have no conditions that could complicate surgery or anaesthesia, such as alcohol addiction.
After surgery most people will be closer to their ideal weight as identified by the BMI chart but will still carry some excess weight and loose skin.
Weight loss surgery modifies the anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract. Weight loss surgery works in two main ways: it can make your stomach hold less food, or it can reduce how much of the food you eat your body takes in.
